waterl0gged
O.K. Been following along for a while now ............. mostly on the Hot-tub forum. Have had a hot tub for about 1 year, and with the help from this forum (thanks chem-geek and waterbear !) , my hot tub has been running great with the dichlor / bleach method. Now I am on to bigger (maybe better) things. Yes.............still keeping the hot tub ! We just purchased a new (to us) home with an inground pool . Dims are 35' x 18'. Deep end is 8' with a shallow end of 3. Vinyl liner with plastic or fiberglass steeps. Diving board too ! Here is the confusing part. All of the filtration equipment is in a pump house. I have a cartridge style filter AND a sand filter AND a DE filter all plumbed into a mess of PVC piping. They each appear to be plumbed with shutoffs and looks like each can be run individually or all together. Guess its up to the person "turning the valves". I am thinking of keeping the cartridge and DE filters and dumping the sand filter all together. Maybe install a chlorinator in place of the sand filter..............or not. Might go with liquid chlorine or bleach too and just add stabilizer as needed. Any thoughts on this crazy filtration set-up ??? Oh yea............there is also some kind of heat exchanger plumbed all the way up in the attic too ! I will likely get rid of that............not real keen on circulating 20,000 + gallons of pool water through my attic ! Thanks for the opinions . waterl0gged
stevenz1g
What an odd installation... Start with basics: As you probably already know, the D.E. filter is going to filter to a lower micron than both the cartridge and sand. If you're looking for most optimal filtration, keep that. I like to think of D.E filters as "supercharged" sand filters. You get the convenience of backwashing and even more optimal filtration than cartridge. Having said that, I don't see as many D.E filters as cartridge/sand in my area. WHY they would keep all three? Most likely laziness. Either way, if it were my house and my *** retentiveness, I'd get rid of the other filters, clean the plumbing up, and give myself a pat on the back. Sell the others on craigslist or keep them for back-up - it's your pool.
