  1. We have now had our pool with spill over spa for 6 years now. I pay the company that built it to open and close the pool each year. Since day 1 the spa return (the opening that puts water into the spa) had the jet taken out as it could not allow enough water into the spa to allow the system to run properly. I questioned it at the time why this would be since the spa is designed to be combined with a pool, but really never received a proper answer. It is no big deal and without the jet it allows a good flow of water. Each year a different crew shows up to open the pool and this year was no different. The bearing in the main pump screams a bit when you turn it on and I guess the pool guys left the system off after they finished not knowing if it would stop whining. It lasts maybe 5 minutes and then runs smoothly. I got home and decided to turn the system on and make sure the pump did indeed work properly. Started it up and had to prime it to get the water flow going. Once I got it going, I then wanted to run the spill over to move all the chemicals they put in around well. We have a diverter to either feed the water into the pool or the spa. When I turned the handle to direct it to the spa quite a bit of water started to leak out at that diverter. I saw that the diverter had about 6 screws all around it and started tightening them and wondered if the winter cold had cracked it or maybe the gasket (if there is one) has worn out. After tightening most of the screws it reduced to a drip and I figured I might need to get a new one. So now I have all the water being diverted to the spa and can't figure out why I am not getting that large flow of water spilling over the side and then thought maybe the intake at the bottom of the pool is blocked by too much leaves and switched to the skimmer but no change..... Now I was thinking that the pump is not working properly and then thought maybe the jets in the spa are turned off and need to be opened all the way...( I knew this could not possibly be the problem, but I will try anything at this point. I opened a few up and still no change...then I noticed that the return in the spa had a jet in it. WTF!!! We have never had one in there for this reason... I guess the pool guys had a spare jet and decided it was missing and put it in. The part I can't figure out is after 6 openings, why did the other 5 crews just ignore that missing jet? Today I will remove the jet when I get home from work and I can probably be 100% assured that everything will run fine and even that small leak may be fixed.... Just wondering why the MFGer of the spa would have a jet (return) that cant deal with the water flow?
  2. I had this issue last year but the heater still worked and it would go away after a few seconds. Now it sits in CE mode and either wont work at all and sits in stanby, or it will fire up and then go to stanby and continue running normally with no way of turning it off short of shutting the whole system down. I found that if I gave the top of the heater a good whack it would start working again, which leads me to think something is loose, although that method does not work all the time. I have someone coming to look at it but before I hear the bad news, I just wanted to hear what might be some advice as to not being jerked around by someone who thinks that they can siphon me for large $$$$ thanks guys
  3. That I believe is true and I try to keep the water level below the half way mark of the skimmer. I the water is higher the debris does not get sucked in as easily of at all. I would like to get the cover back on but just dont understand what keeps it ion place?
  4. My pool is new and every time I dove in the weir would detach due tothe turbulance of the water. Finally one side broke and then I got a new Hayward weir cover and the same thing. When you see the opening it snaps into it's amazing if it stayed in at all. I now dont have the cover as it is a pain and the skimmer seems to work so I don't understand your statement. Outside of stopping debris from floating back in what other purpose is there?
  5. hell I am no scientist so I will hpefully think 5 bucks is the correct answer...lol That I can swalllow. I live in Canada and although it typically is in the 80's and 90's during july and august, this year so far has been pitiful and we have not even turned the AC onin the house yet. The pool is surrounded by cedar trees and 2 houses but we do get quite a bit of sun during the day however around 5 or so the sun crosses over a corner of my house and blocks out the pool for about an hour then returns again. the solar cover blew off about a month ago and I still need to repair it and currently use the pill to try and save evaporation...no clue if it works as I have not owned a pool long enough to determine much of anything so far. This weekend I have to repair the cover. global warming? bah humbug

  7. So this morning I wake up and watch the local morning shows and I see that today is going to go up to 24celcius and be sunny so before heading off to work I crank the heater up to 80. The whole day the sun never, not once showed its face and the temp was 16. I got home all pissed off and the heater only made it to 77. Well I went in anyways so not to waste the effort to heat it although it was a bit chilly. finished off in the spa to bring my body temperature back to normal. Just a ballpark figure is what I wonder it cost to have the heater run continually for nearly 10 hours. We have a Hayward 250 H heater. any guesses? 10 bucks? 20?
  8. I have found that the Mr Clean magic eraser work incredibly on the spa and the pool liner. I am a little uncertain how it does or what the active chemical is that can take off stains so easily wherby a scrub brush hardly makes a dent. Are these pads safe?
  9. I have read and heardwherby people use a timer to turntheir filter on and off daily. Thought that was a great idea and went searching. Found a good timer for outdoor use and opened it and figured out all the digital settings. Went outside and as I stared at the wall with all the switches and wiring I see that my pool filter is hard wired direct from the main breaker in the basement. Now why would they do that? Is it so uncommon to want to use a timer? What alternatives do I have?
  10. we have a 29 ft x 16 ft pool with a 8'deep end. Heating takes about 45minutes per degree (F) How much more %age wise might I have to pay to not use a solar blanket if we keep the ppol at 80 when using it. If the savings are only 100 bucks a season than I say to hell with it as the routine of winding and unwinding on an iregular shaped pool is a royal pain. Your thought?
  11. When our pool was completed I got the ol 1hr learn everything seminar. The guy ripped open a plastic bag of shock and poured it in the deep end. Is this the correct proceedure or should I mix it with water then put it in the pool. Just curious if it can damage the liner in a powder form?
  12. im real green here so can you tell me what D.E. stands for?
  13. Today was the last straw. We had the pool installed and finished last Sept and it is a humpback kidney shape. The solar cover is a royal pain as it really does not roll up nicely due to the shape but today was it!!!!! Gusting winds ripped it right off the pool and broke away every string connecting it to the winder and it flew up and on the other side of the yard. I have seen these fish gizmos that you put in the pool which create some sort of film on the surface to prevent evaporation. Although not as effective as the solar blanket it is painless and easy, they last a month so for 12 bucks a month I dont have to have the solar blanket issue, besides I find it ugly looking. Anybody ever try these out and if so your opinion on them?
  14. I still have my winter cover on the pool and it has about 2 feet of melted snow and ice in it. The pool is not scheduled to open for another week and yesterday I notice hundreds of mosquitos flying out of the pool. What can I put into that water to kill the little varmints that wont do any harm to the pool cover or the pool itself? Chlorine?
  15. well it seems it was made correctly as a rep from the company that makes the liners called me. Somewhere in the mfg process they cant weld the tile graphic any closer to the top of the liner so that 1" of the graphic that is used in the water goes above the tile graphic. It looks strange but thats the way it is. I am in the graphics businisess and next summer I may just apply a 3m white vinyl pinstripe all allong the top of the liner to hide the blue effect.
