Arctickodiak
Hi, I am a newbie to this forum. I have been using the ClearRay system for about two years. It does help minimize the amount of chems, but I still have to remember to add some granular chloride once per week and shock occasionally. My kids have moved out for the most part and it is now just my wife and I that use the tub a few time a month, so I wanted a system that would not require me to remember to add chemicals unless there is an unusually high bather load. I went with the ChlorMaker, which I just received. My question is: Can I continue to use the inline ClearRay in conjunction with the drape over ChlorMaker? Will it help the water quality to use both or is the ClearRay redundant? Will using both together cause any chemical issues due to the two systems counteracting one another? I figure it is not worth my time to remove the ClearRay to try to sell on ebay, so I rather leave it plumbed in if it will not cause any adverse actions in junction with the ChlorMaker. Thoughts and Opinions are much appreciated. Cheers.
chem geek
Yes, you can continue to use the ClearRay UV system with ChlorMaker, but keep in mind that UV will destroy chlorine so if the UV system is powerful then you may need to turn up your ChlorMaker as a result. You can try turning off your UV system to see the baseline on-time for the ChlorMaker needed to maintain a chlorine level and then turn on the UV system to see what sort of difference it makes. If the ChlorMaker properly maintains a chlorine level, and you add extra chlorine manually if you have a higher bather load, then you shoudn't need the ClearRay UV, but it's up to you and if it doesn't cause problems (such as excessively higher chlorine demand), then you can use it. Don't forget that with the ChlorMaker you should put in some Cyanuric Acid (CYA) after a fresh refill -- either with pure CYA or by using Dichlor for a while (around 33 ppm FC cumulatively added over time). Otherwise, the chlorine from ChlorMaker will be too strong since it really needs some CYA to moderate chlorine's strength.
