Drinking Hot Tub Water In Emergency

If the water is clean and filtered and adequately brominated, it should be safe to drink in an emergency. Whether you want to drink it after a dozen kids had a hot tub party is another issue... :)

It would be better not drink hot tub water in large quantities. Even pool water can be dicey. Read Pool water safe for emergencies? The main problem, especially in spas, is with the many chlorinated disinfection by-products. In a spa they build up to much higher concentration than in a pool, at least towards the end of a water change interval. Also, if you use boric acid then that is also not something to drink in quantity. See Are Borates Safe to Use?

If you have no other choice, it's better to drink it than to dehydrate, but it's not a first choice source. If you can, you can use water from your hot water heater as a source of drinking water. In an emergency where the fill water input may be contaminated, shut off the input to your water heater and use its water for drinking (if you don't have bottled water stored already).

Do what the survivalists do and drink your urine. They say it is sterile, even if disagreeable. Seriously, I agree with those who caution against drinking heavily chemically altered water as all spa water is. I like the "boiling, chlorine, iodine" comment. Although it would seem that spa water is chlorinated enough to fall into the caution, remember that it is the other additive, CYA and such, that make spa water different from water chlorinated for drinking purposes. So, if you have the capacity in the emergency, boil it. If not, hope you have some iodine available. This is Boy Scout stuff.
