  1. do a yahoo image search for "boatman" and let us know if that's what you have??? Supposedly they don't bite or sting. I"ve got them on our pool and they're pretty harmless. They come and go, not much you can do but at the same time, they really don't cause any problems. Here...do they look like this? If not, does anyone else have these? I do! Water boatmen are aquatic bugs that have the hindlegs adapted as paddles for swimming. They are flattened and swim the right side up whereas the similar looking backswimmers (Notonectidae) and deep-bodied, have a keel-shaped back, and swim on their backs. Water boatmen are mainly predaceous on small insect larvae but some species can also feed on algae and on minute organisms such as rotifers and diatoms. They have wings and can leap out of the water and take flight.
  2. Compred to what I have, I'd say that price is considerably high. Maybe pool prices vary from different parts of the country, but I've got a pool just about that size that you're looking at with all the same options except for the salt chlorinator (-1000) and I paid about $14000 less than that....yes, 14 grand. And, I've got a Viking Blue Crystite (supposedly costs more than the basic white). That price included everything and all electricaians/plumbers....AND I've got a 3 foot edge of concrete with a huge patio poured off of one end that's about 36' x 20'. Get some more quotes!
  3. Thanks waterbear! You are the man! (Or maybe woman, the name really doesn't tell the gender.) I've been trying to find the answer to this for a long time. I went back to my local pool supply store today and they told me to raise my PH up way high and let it sit....then the next day, add the muratic acid and it should bring them both down. So, now I've got an outrageously high PH after adding about 5lbs of Sun brand PH up. Was planning on adding the muratic acid tomorrow morning. But.....your suggestion sounds much better and from what I've seen around here, you have all the right answers and know your stuff! Thank you so very much! I greatly appreciate it!
  4. I need help in the worst way! Fiberglass pool...18,200 gallons I'm tired of playing the yo-yo game trying to get the TA and PH in line. My TA was at 150 3 days ago and the ph was at 6.8. My local pool store told me to add Muratic Acid to get the TA in line first, which I did. (Added about 2 quarts over the period of 24 hours) So, I got the TA to the 100 mark and started adding PH up to get the PH to at least 7.2 Finally after adding 6 lbs over the course of 24 hours got the PH all set to the 7.2 mark. But......tested the water this morning and I'm right back where I started....except even worse! So darned frustrating! I'm now reading 170 TA and only 6.8 PH. HELP ME! :wacko

  6. so, which one of these do I do???? Lower and alkalinity and leave ph extremely low for a while? or.... Get the PH up to where it should be and give the alkalinity time to drop on its own? In other words, does your "give it a few weeks to settle down" mean to put the alkalinity where it should be and let the ph settle??? or..... Put the PH where it should be and let the alkalinity settle???

  8. does shutting off the pump and turning it back on (without opening the feeder) produce the same result of dirty water? No....the dirty water only comes after I open the chlorinator and allow the air to get into the lines and also allowing the sand filter to "drain". I assume this allows all the lodged dirt to work free and make it's way to the pool.
  9. I don't have any way to shut off the lines and keep the pressure from releasing. Unless maybe I put the sand filter on "CLOSE"???? Would that "hold" the water in it and keep this from happening? I have a lever that I can switch from SKIMMER to VAC (which is the side / suction for plugging in the vac) and there's no way to shut these both down. It's either one or the other or a combo of the two. And yes, I've backwashed the filter and rinsed too....quite often and this still happens. Need help! Tired of flooding my pool with dirt when adding tablets!
  10. I've got an automatic chlorinator and when I add tablets to it and turn the pump back on, the jets start streaming out tons of dirt and clouds the pool up terribly! I assume it's doing this because of taking the cap off of the chlorinator, it releases the pressure on the system and I can hear the water draining down out of the sand filter. Then, when I turn it back on, all of the dirt that has become dislodged from the sand filter can easily work it's way though and out to the jets. So, just for clarification, here's what's happening. Per instructions on chlorinator, I turn off my pump. Unscrew cap off of chlorinator...at this point I can hear air bubbling up through the filter and pool pump because of the pressure release. Add tablets Put cap back on. Turn on pump Sand filter starts filling up again with water......and here comes tons of dirt out of my jets.....clouding up the pool very VERY VERY badly! What am I doing wrong?
