Pool Wont Stay Primed

I have a hayward pump that doesn't want to stay primed on the pool suction side. It is plumbed with a jandy valve to select between spa suction and pool suction. On the pool side it is then separated again into skimmer and cleaner pipes with old metal gate valves. When I turn the jandy to spa only suction the pump primes perfectly. Once I turn it over to pool only pump won't prime..

I am guessing these gate valves are just worn out and allowing air to enter the system. One valve is actually stuck and doesn't move at all. Should I just re plumb with 1 1/2 pvc ball valve?

I have checked everything else. Lines are clear and impeller and o-rings are all good and in place.

Thanks

Do you have a pool cleaner? If yes check that there are no holes in the hoses. Check for suction leaks on the pool side piping. Sounds like your sucking air from somewhere. Regardless, I'd change out those gate valves.

I agree with waterbear! ball valves are inexpensive incomparison to jandy valves, but they are completely rebuildable, and in the long run you'll be more pleased.

I believe you mean the jandy type valves are rebuildable and better in the long run. Your post did not make that clear.
