Maintaining Bromine Levels With Spa Frog

Recommended Posts

I have a new hot tub (Caldera Kauai) and I am able to get an initial bromine level by using granular sanitizer (85% trichlor and 15% sodium bromide), which lasts for 2 days. I have an inline spa frog system that is then supposed to maintain the bromine level without the further need for granular sanitizer. I have now gone through two different bromine cartridges and I am never able to get a non-zero bromine reading beyond the intial 2 days during which the granular sanitizer is working. I am using oxidizer shock regularly, the water flows through the spa frog cartridge when I open the capsule, and the aquacheck test strips are working because they register bromine from the sanitizer. Please help - the dealer is stymied! Thanks!

The reading you are getting after adding the granular bromine may be they chlorine that is mixed with it. Causes a high reading on the bromine test strip, then when chlorine is gone...no reading. Try using a non chlorine shock to re-establish the bromine and see what/how long you get a reading for. It sounds to me that you are not re-establishing enough bromine to sustain your use (I am pretty sure that the bromine in the frog system is close to pure so you are very much relying on the shock to re-establish it) Read the various post to how bromine works so you have a good understanding and it may help you out.

Also, did you start with a bromine reserve (sodium bromide granuals) when you started the tub up? It takes a long time for enough bromine to dissolve in the water that if you did not start with a reserve, then you maybe playing catch up.
