chem geek Posted May 30, 2012 Report Share Posted May 30, 2012 Calcium chloride raises the Calcium Hardness (CH). It is not a source of chlorine. I think perhaps you meant Cal-Hypo which is calcium hypochlorite. That can be used as a source of chlorine, but it will raise the CH as well. There is no such thing as "pool shock" in spite of labeling. Chlorine is chlorine whether it is used for everyday maintenance or for shocking (as in the verb) the pool to high chlorine levels.
