Gunite Pool.... Stain? Algae? Help...

Recommended Posts

So, first time pool owner, and just getting started with this whole process... Could really use some help... I have a Gunite/Saltwater pool and I have some yellowish stains/alage on the bottome of the pool... I went to the pool store(Leslie's) and the guy told me to try and rub a lemon on it to see if that removed the stain... I did try and it didnt do anything.. So what now? He checked the water and said it look fine, but would really like to get this off the bottom of my pool.... Sry if I didnt provide enough info, but what should I try next?

Thanks

First, post a full set of test results (FC, CC, pH, TA, CH and CYA) AND your make/model of SWCG and type of salt used.Staining is a water chemistry issue (except for organic stains from leaves and they will be leaf shaped!) Tan ot brown stains on plaster are usually either scale or iron. Staining usually occurs when people do not test their own water or test it with 'guess strips' instead of a good test kit. IF you are testing your own water weekly with a decent kit (such as Taylor K-2006) then you are on top of your water and conditions that lead to staining can be caught and corrected before they lead to problems.

Are the stains rougher or smoother than the surrounding area or do they seem to be in the plaster?

The guy at Leslie's was a bit off base. Don't use a lemon but get a plain vitamin C tablet and hold it on a stained area for about 30=60 seconds and report if the stain disappears under the tablet. IF it does the stain is iron. If it does't then we need your water chemistry numbers (and perhaps a history of certain parameters if you have them) to continue.

Once we determine the stain we can treat it.
