Can You Put Above Ground Pool Sunk Into An Indoor, Inground Pool?

I have a unique question. We have an indoor, in-ground, 20X40, 3ft to 10ft deep pool that was probably built in the 70's. We filled with water last year but after 3-4 weeks, it ran dry; so we think it's the main drain. In brain-storming ideas, is it possible to fill the deep end with mason sand to level it, and install an above ground pool (which would be sunken into the ground)? Since it would be sunken into the hole, we would then level it to the floor and do the cosmetics. HELP!
