  1. I used bromine on my first fill of our new tub. I had the same thing happen to me. My water was in perfect balance, and I checked the sanitizer levels almost daily. My family used the tub all the time, so our bather load was huge. After about a month and a half, the water took on a green tint. I have no idea where this color came from. I did start to use a defoamer on occasion, but that was the only chemical I added besides the bromine tabs and chlorox bleach. I have since switched to the dichlor then bleach method, and I love it. The water seems to be staying sparkly clean, and it costs less than the bromine method.
  2. Get your TA down to 60 or so and your pH will be around 7.6 or 7.7. If you've read that your TA should be at 100, that's just too high to a have your pH where it should be. I would add one ounce of muriatic acid, run pump for 20 minutes, and then test again. You are very close, just don't overdue it.
  3. My TA was really high at 390. On my first fill, I added two ounces at a time, as I didn't want to overdue it. 6 hours later, I was in the ball park with a TA of around 70, and pH of 7.8. On my next fill, I added 8 oz of muriatic acid twice, and then cut it in half again and again until I was in the ballpark. It only took 2 hrs on this fill. When I added the acid, both my pumps were on high and I dumped the acid in the middle (or an outstretched arm) of the tub. I would say you want to get your TA down to 60 or 70 for your pH to be relatively stable at 7.6 to 7.8.
  4. My water is not the same as your water. You need a good test kit first, then we can tell you what to add.
  5. I bought mine from a local dealer. I paid $210 for 4 filters. I only did this because I wanted to establish a relationship with a business that I might have service my tub in the future. I could have bought the same filters from ebay for $130. Well, one of the filters broke off in the tub a month ago, and I took it back to the dealer, and he gave me a new one, no questions asked. I'm not sure if the ebay seller would have done this for me. These are unicel filters, and are supposed to be one of the better brands. Your dealer will more than likely have a high price on them, but if you have trouble, the dealer will be there to help you, I hope.
  6. No, I just used the TSP to clean my dishes. I read on this forum or another that TSP does a good job of cleaning your filters. I found TSP on amazon, and read the reviews. Well, the reviews talked about using TSP in your dishwasher, and how it gets your dishes very clean. So, the moral of the story is, hot tub owners have clean dishes too.
  7. 18 hours seems like a really long time to heat up. What was the air temp outside when you started heating? I bought TSP to clean my filters, but I haven't used it yet, besides in our dishwasher.
  8. Thanks, chem. I am using bromine in our tub. I can assume that a bromine tub will not be as clear as a dichlor-bleach tub, correct?
  9. There is a formula for this. I am interested in it also. I have a J375 that has been running for one month now, and the water is definitely less sparkly then when I originally filled. Our tub gets used every day by at least two family members during the week, and sees all 5 of us many times during the weekend. This loss of clarity doesn't bother me much, but what other factors does a person look for to determine a drain and refill? Will the water start "eating up" more bromine or chlorine when it's near the end of it's hot tub life? I'm sure chem geek has the answers for us!
  10. Thanks, preserved swine. I stand corrected. I read that info in some literature from a dealer. So, using these numbers, pH 7.6, TA 60, CH 10, temp. 102, 50ppm borates, I get a CSI of -1.23. Is this OK for my Jacuzzi Hot Tub? preservedswine: pork hocks?
  11. I've read that soft water with no CH would attack your pumps. You need CH in your water.
  12. Looks to me like you added chemicals that weren't needed. A TA of 60 and pH of 7.8 is darn near perfect. Why did you add the prevent 2 to the water? I have high iron in my well water also, and I just used a pre-filter on the end of the hose when I filled up. My CH was 280 from the well, and my soft water was 10 ppm. I added about 2/3 well water, and the rest soft water. I ended up with a CH of 150. You should test your well water for CH. If you have a higher CH, maybe just drain out half or so and then add water from your well. What is cal-rise? Is it calcium chloride? Does it say on the container? From what I've read on this site, I wouldn't worry about your TDS. You will dump and refill in 3-6 months for a fresh batch of water. Good luck.
  13. I used a mixture of vinegar and water the first time I cleaned the scum line on my hot tub. It worked well. My wife bought something at the spa store called baquaspa surface cleaner, it is rather expensive at $13 a bottle, but it also cleans well. I've also heard that clorox wipes do the job, and they are fairly cheap. I would say the main thing is staying on top of it and not let a noticeable scum line persist.
  14. Is this a brand new tub, like one month old? If it is only one month old, that is the gunk coming off of your bathers, I would guess. I have been using a hot tub for a few weeks now. We keep it as clean as we can. If I see a scum line forming, I clean it. We had a hot tub party a week ago, and the next morning we had a dandy scum line already. I would decontaminate your tub, even if new, and start fresh.
